According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2020 is on pace to finish third all-time, behind 2016 and 2019.
Researchers say the numbers are alarming because temperatures remained high despite the effects of La Niña, which typically cools sea temps in the Pacific Ocean.
2020 will also cap off the hottest decade on record dating from 2011-2020.
